Erectile Dysfunction (ED), or sexual impotence, may be more common amid men who smoke cigarettes than men who do not smoke.
ED is a sexual disorder characterized by the ability to attain and sustain an erection. A man experiences repeatedly feeble erection even after proper sexual stimulation. There could be a few physical or psychological conditions responsible for developing erectile dysfunction. However, the main pathology behind feeble erection is poor flow of blood to the male organ due to clogging of arteries.

According to a survey made on more than 8,000 men aged 20 to 60 years, the incidence rate of erectile dysfunction is relatively high in men were heavy smokers. The ED rick increased by 40% in men who smoked more than 20 cigarettes daily.
Most men who smoked cigarettes experience trouble in getting and maintaining an erection during sexual activity. There is a strong link between smoking and erectile dysfunction.
Chronic smoking increases the risk of heart disease, which is one of the causative factors of erectile dysfunction. Smoking hardens the arteries, making the blood flow sluggish. A cigarette smoke contains innumerable toxins that are deposited in the arteries, making the lumen narrow. Accumulation of waste products in the blood vessels affects the overall blood flow. Ultimately, the penile organ fails to receive adequate blood to experience an erection.
Smoking is also one of the leading causes of premature death. Men who smoke are vulnerable to heart disease, which is one of the major etiological factors of impotence.
The study also revealed that adjusting other factors causing erectile dysfunction did not change the findings. However, the risk of impotence was less common among men who consumed moderate alcohol and who were taking heart medicines. Impotence and heart disease usually share a common risk factor i.e. smoking.
Researchers point out that the study shows strong evidence between smoking and erectile dysfunction, which may help motivate men to quit smoking. Studies have found that men who cease smoking habit experience remarkable improvement in their erectile abilities. In addition, quitting smoking helps improve the functions of heart and other vital organs of the body, including the male reproductive organ.
